Apologies for the late appearance of last week's Games Index, due to Edge Online's site outage on Friday. Please note that the chart games are taken from last Monday's UK top ten selling games.
Every week, the Edge Games Index, produced in association with Brandwatch, rates games according to the volume of positive and negative buzz they're inspiring on the web.
Each chart allows you to rank the list by the overall quantity of buzz about each title, by the quantity of positive or negative buzz, and by the percentage of positive or negative buzz. To explain the numbers you’ll see on the charts, the number alongside the volume of responses represents the absolute number of mentions the game in question has had, while the ‘last week’ column represents a game’s position in relation to the others on the chart seven days ago.
The data is compiled by brand intelligence specialist Brandwatch. To find out how its system works, see our explanation.
UK Chart November 16
Few will be surprised by the sheer dominance of a certain title in this Games Index, taken from the UK's top ten selling games.
Modern Warfare 2, with 38,752 mentions overall, dwarfs all other games on the list in terms of the number of mentions it has received, according to Brandwatch's web crawling.
That's not to say that there aren't a few other surprises in the list. Mario Kart Wii has taken second place with 4143 mentions, a significant achievement for a game that's been on the market since April 2008. Closer analysis of Brandwatch's data reveals that over 50 per cent of the talk about it has come from Twitter, and eight per cent of mentions came close to mentions of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, so it's likely the impact of Mario's latest appearance is fuelling engagement with his older Wii titles.
Modern Warfare 2's buzz isn't entirely upbeat. Only 48 per cent of it was positive, compared to Lego Batman's leading 57 per cent positive buzz, while 11 per cent of Modern Warfare 2's buzz is negative, only one point below Mario Kart Wii's lowest 12 per cent.
And on the subject of Lego Batman, not only is it quietly taking the highest proportion of positive buzz but, apparently satisfying audiences thoroughly, it's inspiring the lowest proportion of negative buzz, too, with it comprising just three per cent of its total.
Lego Batman, by the way, takes its place in this week's chart because of its inclusion in Microsoft's Wireless Entertainment Pack for 360 alongside offroad racer Pure. Pure has inspired the least buzz this week, with 130 mentions.
Lastly, FIFA 10 is retaining its strong hold on the internet's consciousness, taking third place in overall mentions and second place in terms of positive buzz with 54 per cent.
Modern Warfare 2 is clearly this week's leader, of course. And even with another tier of Christmas releases about to make a splash, it will surely maintain a robust position for weeks to come.
