Cowen and Company analyst Doug Creutz has declared that the “Wii bubble could be deflating” and “PS3 may finally be poised for a rebound.”
Having polled 1,312 individuals and 1,013 game players on purchase intent as part of Cowen’s Fall 2009 Video Game Survey, Creutz suggested that Wii software sales are fading.
“Our survey data confirms that Wii owners are buying fewer games now than they did a year ago, particularly Wii owners who do not also own an Xbox 360 or PS3. In contrast, Xbox 360 and PS3 owners plan to buy more games this holiday than last year. Gamers who own a Wii in addition to another console tend to consider their Wii as a secondary console.”
The survey also indicates “flagging demand for Wii software among Wii-only owners, who we believe are largely casual and mass market gamers”.
In contrast, the survey suggests that PS3 hardware appears to be gathering some momentum. Hardware intent to purchase data indicates that 21 per cent of respondents that don’t own a PS3 intend to buy one eventually.
“Intent to purchase statistics indicate that the PS3 is currently well ahead of the Xbox 360 and is closing the gap on the Wii. Price/value survey data indicates that the PS3 is now significantly more competitively priced than the Xbox 360 based on the incremental value added by its Blu-ray player.”
I wish I could say that I was surprised. I never thought of myself as a Nintendo fanboy until I realised that I was still holding on futile hope after a prolonged games drought and Nintendo's continued dismissal of PAL gamers. The virtual console is bringing back the wrong kind of memories (borders, speed cuts, slow releases) and the Wii release schedule makes me remember why I bought a Playstation and let the N64 gather dust. I don't even want to get started on casual games. *sigh*
Wii's current downturn is merely software related in my opinion. Get a few of the right titles out and it will pick right back up. I think the only difference now is it won't be selling at quite such a frenetic pace. No console can maintain sales that high forever.
I'm glad the PS3 is doing better. I have all 3 consoles and really don't want one just dominating the industry. Competition is good for us all. We wouldn't be getting nearly the improvements in the machines( montion controls, online additions, movies, etc etc) if it wasn't for each company one upping each other every few months.
I realy do enjoy Tiger Wood's 10 on the Wii. Certain games Wii just does well and Tiger Wood's is one of them. I have it on PS3 too and while it looks better, the motions controls are just more fun on the Wii.
Does this mean rather than selling 10 times as many systems as their competition they'll only sell maybe 5 times as many? That's a real bad position to be in.
PS3 is now a serious competitor after losing it's price and size bloat.
Wii hype is over. Nintendo only had the damn Vitality sensor with no games to show at E3.
Let the games begin. 2010 here we come...
Yeah, and let's ignore the fact that Sony did the same thing with the PS dildo.
No doubt. The PS3 is a formidable console and the Sony first-party exclusives that you cannot find anywhere else make it even more appealing. Can't wait for Last Guardian, Gran Turismo 5, Resistance 3, God of War III and Heavy Rain.
All those games and it'll still be outsold by the Wii this holiday. Wii is certainly doomed alright...
J.O.S.E.
The problem with these articles is that it influences the public and later the developers. Basically, it sends a message that Wii games are not selling well anymore, so why bother doing them? How many times did the media influenced the population's opinion? The simple answer is always. We see that in every single industry and subjects. The medias are biased. They don't like a specific politician, so they'll only cover stories that make him look bad. They want you to believe that the swine flu will be responsible for the human race extinction, then keep telling you how many people are dying of it way before the final conclusions are made. They want you to think that Britney's a stupid spoiled brat, then they arras her until she breaks a fuse. Sorry for staying so long off topic, but the gaming industry is also part of the media's influence. Not so long ago medias were raving the Wii as a revolution and now they keep saying that it's not so good anymore. Don't go thinking I'm a Nintendo fanboy. I don't own a Wii. What if you put the numbers together? How many people in the world currently own either a Wii, a PS3 or a Xbox? The Wii alone I believe is around 100 M, so we can assume all three together should be around 250 M. That's a load of consoles. The population of the USA is a notch over 300 M. Meaning that almost every single american owns a console, including toddlers and elders. Add the PS2 sells in the numbers and you basically have every single American, Canadian and Mexican owning a video game platform. To me that's big and it's just normal that sells are eventually slowing down because not everybody is interested in video games.
developers already know Wii games don't sell, this article is just stating the obvious
Can you prove that? Because I can prove otherwise...
It's a vicious circle. People will think nothing worthy is released on the Wii, then they won't buy a Wii. Because the sells are slowing down, games aren't sold as much. Because games don't sells developers don't do them anymore. Since developers don't develop, people think there is nothing good on the Wii.
Nintendo REALLY nee to start releasing or at least announcing some games based on its traditional titles.
Im talking another Zelda, F Zero, Pilotwings, Starfox, the lists goes on and on. I know its an old point but its true
Don't we have one of these articles once every six months? Except this one is based on poll results instead of hard data - which makes in doubly desperate. It's like a running joke in the game industry. The next "Wii bubble bursting" article is due in about March 2010. Meanwhile, the Wii will still be comfortably outselling the competition.
"Analysts" never learn!
Thanks! This is pretty much exactly what I was going to say, including something about setting one's watch by these idiotic recurring "Nintendo is doomed" predictions. I hope Doug Creutz had plenty of credibility to spare before publishing this specious tripe.
Next!
This industry hates the Wii and now their spreading FUD at ungodly levels. That's why seeing Nintendo on top each month is so satisfying. I really can't wait to see November NPD just to see the meltdowns after Wii hardware goes through the roof and articles like this just look silly.
You'd have to live under a rock not to already be aware of this utterly obvious analysis.
Wouldn't it be ironic if motion control in general were losing its attraction, and the sony wand and natal both end up selling very badly..?
