The Australian Government has asked the public for its thoughts on if the Australian National Classification Scheme should include an R 18+ rating for computer games.
A discussion paper has been released which notes the key arguments for and against the new rating. Censorship Ministers have considered an adult classification for games on several occasions but they have never looked at public consultation before. The submission date closes on 28 February 2010.
Films, games and some publications are classified under a National Classification Scheme which is a “cooperative arrangement involving the Commonwealth, States and Territories.” The Classification Board classifies films, computer games and publications by applying the Commonwealth Classification (Publications, Films and Computer Games) Act 1995, the National Classification Code and the classification guidelines.
Any changes to the classification policy, such as the introduction of an R 18+ for games, must be unanimously agreed by Commonwealth, State and Territory Censorship Ministers.
Sega’s Aliens vs Predator is the most recent game to be refused classification in Australia, outlawing the sale of the Rebellion-developed action title.
