EA’s Battlefield 1943 has become the fastest selling Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network download-only title.

The multiplayer FPS, which features two modes, four maps and supports 24 players online, broke day one and week one download-only game records worldwide on Xbox 360, and in the US on PS3.

Since its launch on July 8, the DICE developed WWII shooter has sold over 600,000 copies across both platforms.

"We are honoured by the reception that the game has received so far," said Battlefield 1943 producer Gordon Van Dyke. "We can now truly say that we have set a new standard for what can be done in the downloadable games category.”

The game, which is reviewed here, is available for 1200 MS Points (£10.20/$15) on Xbox 360 and £9.99/$15 on PS3.

good for EA... but how about some innovation next time, not just another bang-bang, shootemindahead WWII fps... you guys DO still own the Space Hulk rights, correct? If not, grab them and cook up an all-new, innovative game IP that's got a single, multiplayer and "commander" mode and then I'll be impressed.

Firstly, very cool that Edge has started introducing videos with the articles

Fantastic game, fully deserved. As Hawko said, probably the best Battlefield game yet.

@ johhnyabc: Yeh i occasionally get the wavering black lines visual bug but it's rare and disappears within seconds

I finally got some points, just for this game. But now am stuck with 300 points, now I need another 1500pt pack to get something decent (am i the first to notice this con?). Anway for the price, great value. But my copy bugs out occasionally with a weird black lines.

Haven't played this yet, is it MP only? I was thinking of giving it a go, but I am still completely addicted to the KZ2 multiplayer and all it's tasty DLC.

... And well-deserved at that. The game is amazing on it's own merits, not only as a download-only title. Perhaps one of the greatest that have been released in the series.
