The Call Of Duty franchise has surpassed 55 million unit sales since debuting in 2003, generating over $3 billion at retail.

That’s according to data from the NPD Group, Chart-Track, GfK and publisher Activision’s internal estimates.

The latest title in the franchise, Infinity Ward's Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, broke box office and videogame records with a worldwide estimated five-day sale through of approximately $550 million.

"Call Of Duty has become one of the greatest entertainment franchises of all time," said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. “If you consider the number of hours our audiences are engaged in playing Call Of Duty games, it is likely to be one of the most viewed of all entertainment experiences in modern history."

Nothing was going to stop MW2 being a massive success. The marketing and hype machine, together with a solid game made it inevitable.

I have to say though I was well disappointment and happy to get a good return on the game when I shifted it on eBay after a few days after launch. I probably will get shut down by those who have played it continuously online for the last two weeks without sleep but what the hell.

I was pretty bored most of the way and had to force myself through the remainder to give it a chance.
Yes there were moments of brilliance, yes its a solid FPS, but for the most part I really felt no connection with it. They really need to take some of these damn profits and hire some writers!!!
I had a much greater time with Gears, Halo and Uncharted 2.

Same here.while i was excited at first i quit playing MW2, i got very bored, actually i have more fun now playing the original MGS...is it because as good as is,it's just another fps and not better than the first?

An CoD isn't repetitive? Goes to show people don't know what to buy anymore since this game hasn't changed since it first came out

Impressive figures obviously, but with Pokemon games selling 175 million in total I think the grand claims are a little off.

Pokmon isn't a game though. It's a way of life.

It also cheats by releasing 2 versions each time.

Quite why Activision haven't thought of this yet, I'm not sure.

They're still sold at full price though, so the sales are legit, surely. I do think it's baffling that people buy the two. Also, don't give CoD any ideas.. Otherwise, WAW2 will come in nazi and ally versions, and split up the multiplayer sides that way...

It would surely be do-able, following the COD4 formula of having a SAS story and a yankee story, they would sell as well
