Fallout 3 and developer Jagex have taken home two of the most prized awards at the 27th Annual Golden Joystick Awards, with help from a massive 1,223,646 votes cast by the public.
Bethesda's Fallout 3 for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC was named Ultimate Game Of The Year ahead of Call Of Duty World At War, Left 4 Dead, Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
Cambridge-based Jagex scooped the UK Developer Of The Year award, beating competition from Rockstar North, Lionhead, Codemasters and Media Molecule. The studio behind Runescape says its casual MMO is the world’s largest free online game with more than ten million registered users. Jagex was also recently named one of the fastest-growing private technology companies in the UK.
Other winners on the day included LittleBigPlanet, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, Metal Gear Solid Touch, Left 4 Dead, Call Of Duty: World At War and its publisher Activision Blizzard.

There's nothing here to get particularly worked up about - the games we like is often a very subjective thing.
The only thing I would say is that these awards seem to come so late after the last holiday season that they come across as an extreme afterthought. We've already seen umpteen awards contested between Fallout 3, LBP and Left 4 Dead.
And boy that Uncharted 2 sure is anticipated I agree - can't wait for that one to come out.
Killzone 2
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots
LittleBigPlanet
Call Of Duty: World At War
Fallout 3
Those have to be 5 of the most overhyped/overrated games in the history of videogames.
The PS3 games nominated are laughable.
Does anyone care?
I DIED laughing when I saw the soundtrack of the year candidates. The only one of those whose soundtracks are even worth mentioning is Metal Gear Solid 4. Fallout 3's was fine, but like Zur's other holiday 08 game, Prince of Persia, it's like they only paid him for ten minutes of music, then just repeated that ad nauseum.
I go my mate Fallout 3 for his birthday back in May and its still the only game he plays on his 360 at the minute. Personally I prefer JRPG to western ones and I hope Final Fantasy XIII lives up to my expectations and wins next year. Shame to see LBP not doing better, as for the people who all voted for any of the GTA games, shame on you. That franchise is sooo dull.
Well GTA 4 was the first one I ever played, and while I admit that the missions were the weakest part of the experience it's all the other brilliant touches that made the game for me. Like the TV stations, the genuinely funny acts by Katt Williams & Ricky Gervais in the comedy clubs, the hilarious talkradio & the DJs were all hollywood grade quality, the dating, the early characters, and the ambient sounds of a living breathing city was miles ahead of anything I've ever experienced. The animations were 1st class aswell and dare I say it running people over has never been so fascinating with the realtime procedural animations & ragdoll physics. I then bought Saints Row 2 looking for a similar experience and ... oh dear what a letdown, truly awful sense of immersion.
I'm afraid I found LBP a real letdown after the wow factor of the fantastic visual if all you wanted was a game, I really can't be bothered designing my own levels in any game, that's what I pay £40 to game companies to design exciting game experiences for me.
I thought Fallout 3 was good though ultimately not great, but I think the art really helped to make the game what it was. Personally I preferred GTA 4's atmosphere and immersion factor.
Good to see KZ2 picking up the PS3 award, the SP was well deserving of the award regardless of the unjust criticism most notably from the Edge review.
I'm not sure what period the voting was for but BF1943, GRID & DIRT2 are my online games of the year.
I was going to vote but the voting interface was a complete ball ache, maybe that can be addressed next year by using good old fashioned links to each section rather than that awful embedded scrolling window.
fallout 3 is good but i believe there are better games for this award like LPB,MGS4 or Fable 2 for example
For me Fallout 3 was just Oblivion set in an postapocalyptic world. Plus the story was shit and for me that's the whole point in playing a RPG.
Fallout 3, sigh...has to one of the most over rated games in history. The fact is, it's not a very good game.
This gen can be doing so much better than Fallout 3...
C'mon. Fallout 3 is a good game. Oblivion and Fallout must be my 2 most played games this gen. It just must not have been your cup of tea. I'm not sure if it is game of the year, but it certainly is good.
What would be your game of the year?
There are much better games out there than Fallout 3. Hence why i thought the game was an overhyped bunch of bullshit.
As for my GOTY, it would have to be Machinarium. Honestly, thank fuck for indie devs.
Cool, describe the 2008 version of Machinarium, I want to hear how it was pre-alpha.
