Final Fantasy XIII sold over one million copies in Japan during its first 24 hours of availability, according to estimates from publisher Square Enix.

The title is only available on PS3 in the region, and the sales estimate doesn’t include copies sold as part of hardware bundles, reports GameSpot.

Square Enix shipped around 1.8 million FFXIII units to retailers for launch, and previously forecast worldwide sales of six million copies. The game is due to release on March 9 in the west for both PS3 and Xbox 360.

Having debuted in 1987, lifetime Final Fantasy sales now stand at 92 million units, the publisher added.

This is going to send out a strong signal/message to Japanese Developers hopefully that the PS3 is a system that can accommodate the likes of Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts. Here is to that hope.

I hope you're right. I also hope that Namco decide to release the updated version of Tales of Vesperia in the western market as I'm enjoying the hell out of it on the 360 and would love to play the extended bits. Matron.
