Retailer GameStop has reportedly acquired a majority stake in Jolt Online Gaming, an Ireland-based publisher of free-to-play browser titles.
“Acquiring Jolt is significant building block in our digital business strategy. This is further evidence of our commitment to building a world-class digital business platform,” GameStop general manager Chris Petrovic said in an article originally published on subsidiary Game Informer, although the report was later pulled.
The Sunday Business Post also reported on the deal earlier this month. According to the site, the retailer will invest between €15 million and €20 million in Jolt over the next few years, creating a large amount of jobs in the process.
The publisher of Legends Of Zork, Utopia Kingdoms, Trukz and the upcoming Playboy Manager, Jolt has operations in Dublin, Los Angeles and Delhi.
“Combining Jolt’s expertise as a successful publisher, developer and aggregator of browser based games with GameStop’s vast multi-channel resources will enable us to shape and grow new market opportunities within the videogame entertainment industry,” added GameStop’s Petrovic.
"Going forward, our vision for Jolt is that it will continue its focus on working with our game publisher partners to create online games for game titles and brands that aren't currently being exploited by the publishers themselves and then leveraging our global retail footprint to offer those games to GameStop’s customers.”
