Microsoft will launch Gears Of War 3 in early April 2011, a trusted US publishing source has told Edge.
The first teaser trailer for the third person shooter is expected to debut next month on April 8, exactly one year ahead of the game’s pencilled in release date. A full reveal is due at E3 in June.
While it hasn’t been officially announced yet, Gears Of War 3 is currently in development at series creator Epic Games. It will continue the story set out in the first two games, which centres on humankind's battle for survival against the nightmarish Locust Horde.
Gears Of War debuted on Xbox 360 in 2006 and on PC a year later. A follow up was released for Microsoft’s home console in 2008.
We understand that the game could be completed as early as this year, but that Microsoft is keen to release it during a different window to Halo: Reach – rumoured to be launching in September 2010 – and Natal, which is set to arrive this holiday.
“Microsoft’s keen to avoid a clash with Halo: Reach and wants Natal to own Christmas. That’s why we won’t be seeing Gears Of War 3 until next year, but expect a major marketing push ahead of its release,” said our source.
Epic vice president Mark Rein said this week that the developer won’t be releasing a game this year as it has chosen to focus on supporting titles made by customers of its Unreal Engine.
When contacted about this report, Microsoft told us that it "does not comment on rumour and speculation".
Bigger, boringer, more banal.
FIX THE HORDE MODE PROBLEM! I hate GOW2 online horde mode since the 'update' that broke Horde Mode. All of the horde mode players should not get booted out and have to return to the menu screen just because 1 person quit the game...even if they were the 'host'! Let the remaining players continue to play. I don't understand why this has not been corrected. You can spend hours online playing getting up to the higher levels of horde mode and *POOF*, the host loses connection or just flat out quits and everyone else in the group gets screwed! Booooooooo! Hisssssss!
Epic,
I agree with hordefan on this one.
If there is a way of making it so other gamers don't get booted when the host logs off, please take advantage of it.
@Industry_insider
It didn't take a Epic "a day" to sort out the horrible online side of Gears 2; it took them weeks and weeks. In fact it took them so long to fix it that I ended up losing patience and traded my copy in, for Left 4 Dead.
CaptainQuint,
There was a severe online glitch in Gears of War 2 where absolutely ZERO people could get online to play. This glitch happened on the first day the game was available. It took Epic the same amount of time to recover from this glitch that it took Sony to recover from the recent System Error of the PS3.
If you eperienced some other form of problem that took weeks, I'm sorry to hear about that. Perhaps this was a problem that affected only your local area. But my friends and I never experienced any type of problem with Gears of War 2 other than the one that received all the publicity because it happened on the day of release (which thankfully was fixed very quickly).
Arron, I understand the picture you posted above of Picard being so heart-broken was taken on a day after you and Picard spent time on the holodeck together. I understand the two of you always get yourselves so tired out on the holodeck, particularly since Picard doesn't have a gf or a wife. Is it true that you, Arron, are cut out of this picture above because the two of you broke up. If so, it looks like Picard is taking it really hard.
Maybe this will make you feel better, Arron. Here is a picture Q gave me when you when you were feeling good about yourself after spending some time in the bathroom before the incident with the Borg. You look a lot like Picard, Arron -- that is a cool mustache.
In the picture below, it looks like Picard really loved that experience with the Borg; it seemed to be very sensually stimulating to him. This makes me wonder just how come Picard appears to be so exhausted in that other picture Arron often posts after the two of them went on the holodeck together.
ok firstly Epic need to integrate vehicles into the core gameplay.... like halo CE did nearly 10 years ago. That means actually being able to mount the bloodmounts and control em with a cheeky yoshi-style punch to the head. Then you can eat other players with the bloodmount. Cliffy should also play Uncharted 2 . In that game you can melee while bounding cover. i.e rev up the chainsaw, jump over cover & land on people with the saw. Some battles in knee deep snow would be nice to.
Gears of War 1 & 2 are known for having set new standards for replay value in both the multiplayer a campaign modes. And Gears of War 2 set the standard even higher with its Horde co-op survival mode. Being able to work with a team and talk with everyone while you play adds a lot of strategy and teamwork to the game. It is awesome the way the campaign mode of both Gears of War games branches off multiple times in order to force you to go back and replay through different parts of the game if you want to see all of the story and get all of the achievements. Games like God of War 3 simply lack that type of replay value.
Gears of War 2 was rushed out in time for Christmas, which is why it had that launch-day problem where nobody could play online. Obviously that was a major glitch that Epic should have been ready for, but we need to give credit where it is due -- Epic had that problem fixed in the same time period that Sony recently had the notorious PS3 System Error corrected. The BIG difference is that there were no side effects with the online problem associated with Gears of War 2, while the recent PS3 System Error left people without trophies forever.
Gears of War 3 is a game that will have more than enough time to be completed. I like the way Epic is making sure that the Unreal Graphics Engine is going to be running smoothly this year on all existing platforms in order to remain the number one graphics engine used by third parties. With this type of optimization in mind, I believe we will see a type of elevated graphic standard far beyond the competition, similar to what we saw when the first Gears of War game raised the graphic standards in gaming history.
Of course, it looks like Halo: Reach is going to raise those graphic standards, too. So it will be very interesting to see which game ends up with better graphics. Either way, I'm sure fans of both the Halo series and the Gears of War series will be very happy. Both of those games are sure to be best-sellers.
You shouldn't suck CliffyB's knob so much. As many times as it has been in Mark Rein's ass, that's just asking for trouble..
Picard, Q is a buddy of mine and he told me he didn't like it when you were exhausted after those long trips to the holodeck. Here is a picture he gave me of you when you when you were feeling good about yourself before the incident with the Borg.
In all honesty, Jean Luc, it looks like you really loved that experience with the Borg. It makes me wonder just how come you appear to be so exhausted in that other picture you posted.
Had Gears 1 and 2 when I owned a 360.
Uninspiring, unoriginal, overhyped, not the greatest series ever.
CliffyB is annoying enough to just shade the Twat of the Year awards whenever his titles are due for release. If this and Fable 3 are released close to each other, I'm staying out of the gaming news in case Cliffy and Molyneux try to bullshit my brain to death.
I agree, played Gears 1 on my mates 360 and just couldn't understand what the hype was all about, didn't like the controls, the story was completely generic and the level of swearing was just unnecessary. Gears3 not being released for 13 months is the biggest non-story I think Edge online has ever released.
Loved both the Gears games, so very happy to hear this. Two of the very best shooters in the last 10 years.
This is a huge surprise. I would have never guess they would have made yet another game with space marines and to top it off make it a sequel. Very original indeed. I know I'll be looking forward to seeing how imaginative CliffyB is this time around.
Yes we all know what Greeks, used to like doing with there swords.
There will be no meat filling my head.
I hate the GOW franchise. They are games for meatheads.
Indeed. Give me the elegance of Super Mario Galaxy over Gears of War anyday.
Totally agree, Kratos is such a dick.
YOU DARE BETRAY MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE???
...and this is how you try to the distract some attetion of God of War 3 release.
anyway, love Gears 1 and 2,and honestly their both my main reason to still pay for Live.
Cant wait for Gears 3.
Needs dedicated servers otherwise it will just be a singleplayer game for me.
Gears 2 online killed this franchise, for me. I'll probably rent it just so I can blast through the probably very thrilling campaign, though.
Have they fixed the gears 2 multiplayer campaign yet? I gave up on it but to be fair what it promised sounded awesome, its just a shame it didn't seem to work properly.
Makes sense, Q1 seems to be becoming a big videogame window. I loved Gears 1 but found Gears 2 to be a bit soulless (apart from Hoarde mode which i enjoyed).
