Sony Computer Entertainment Japan will release a limited edition 250GB PS3 in February, and a new PS3 accessory allowing users to watch and record TV the following month.
The 250GB PS3 will be available from February 18 at a recommended retail price of 34,980 yen (£234).
Various 250GB PS3 bundles have been available in Europe and the US since late last year. Japan has seen one in the form of a Final Fantasy XIII hardware bundle, but the model has not been available separately in the country to date.
SCEJ will also launch a digital terrestrial tuner accessory for PS3 that enables users to view and record TV in standard or high definition. Dubbed “torne” and set for release in March, the device sounds similar to the Play TV DVR add on unit already available in Europe.
Featuring PSP connectivity that allows users to transfer recordings to their handheld or access the service remotely, it will retail for 9,980 yen (£67). torne will also be made available as part of a limited edition 250GB PS3 bundle retailing for 42,800 yen (£286).
Interesting. You know, I have no doubt Sony will one-day integrate the whole thing into the PS3 and sell the PS3 as a TV Station/Unit with On-Demand Capabilities through the PSN. It certainly looks like they are going that way. The question is whether they can make it a coherent vision and implement it in a constructive manner.
I know that in Australia they have managed to get PlayTV up to HD standard. In the UK no doubt they are thinking the same. I can really see a integrated PlayTV with 250GB HDD coming one day. When you then combine 3D movies and games and the PS3's firmware update ability, it gives confidence for the future. The ten-year life-cycle is most definitely possible in my opinion.
I think it's more than possible we'll see something like that. I just wonder where the road blocks are for these two systems having something like DVR support more standard. I know the 360 has something in Europe where you can watch TV on it and in the states you can use the 360 as a media center and it'll stream DVR'd stuff from your computer but why is it so difficult for them to just have it built in. Probably some legal shit and it will piss off their partners who sell their TV shows on the 360/PS3.
I agree with you, an intergrated Set-top box/PS3 would defo mark a point at truly making an full home media hub. I would not be suprised to see a deal with BskyB over the next 5 to 10 years, and Sony releasing a Skybox/PS3
