Electronic Arts is expected to announce the closure of Star Wars: Battlefront and Mercenaries developer Pandemic Studios later today.

That’s according to Kotaku sources, who indicate that almost all of the 200 employees at the Los Angeles-based studio will be laid off, with the remaining few set to be incorporated into other EA development teams.

The studio behind Full Spectrum Warrior was formed in 1998 and purchased by EA in 2007.

Army Of Two developer EA Montreal is likely to take on responsibility for Pandemic's remaining IP, including the soon to be released The Saboteur.

The news comes shortly after EA announced plans to axe 1,500 jobs and cancel 12 unannounced projects.

We've contacted the publisher for comment on this report.

Can't say I liked what Pandemic made recently all that much. I noticed them with the first Mercenaries and some previous games, BUT Merc2 disappointed me, much more than I had originally hoped. They should take this opportunity and run actually. EA wouldn't have helped them anyway, they only really wanted Bioware in the first place.

To all former Pandemic employees....Infinity Ward their asses and go creates games you want to do, make them good and just know EA HAS ALWAYS DONE CRAP LIKE THIS and are you really surprised? Really?

See this is what EA does... If they cant succeed after buying a STUDIO out, since they hate competition - They simply close their doors... Pfft... Nice going!! So what do these 200 talented individuals do? .... Hmm good luck to them all...

It's what known as business, it sucks for the 1700 people EA have layed off over the past fortnight. I do genuinely feel sorry for the layed off staff but this is how industries progress, it's a necessary evil.

Is it because of the recession or company restructuring....

I would say restructuring, however the big bad recession probably forced EAs hand, lets face it EA have to look to the future and can anyone honestly say the future is in the games that Pandemic make?
