Sony has expressed its satisfaction with the European launch of the PS3 and PSP video delivery service.
“We can’t reveal any specific numbers yet, but I can say that we are very pleased with the performance of the service so far, and that it has indeed surpassed expectations,” SCEE product marketing director Mark Hardy told us.
The service debuted in Europe last month with over 2,000 titles to rent or buy, and Hardy said that Sony will continue to “add about 50 movies per week”.
He also explained why the service, which launched in the US in mid-2008, took so long to make it to Europe.
“We wanted to ensure we had a strong line-up of content in each country at launch, including local market content as well as movies from the major Hollywood studios. That requires separate negotiations in each of the territories, which as you can imagine, takes more time than negotiating content for just one single country. Part of SCEE’s success arises from the fact that we’ve always tried to provide our customers with as much local market content as possible; that may take a little more time to negotiate, but we hope consumers in the different markets agree that it is worth the wait... We will be making further announcements about the rollout to additional territories in the new year."
It's a shame then that the interface is so horrible. What worked for games certainly does not work for Videos. Especially for us laggards that don't have an HD TV - the text is almost impossible to read.
They need to take a good hard look at Media Centre apps like XBMC and then re-vamp the store's interface...
HD console - buy a HD TV! Kidding, I know they are expensive, buying one means I now have to save for the PS3, but still rather do it this way. The interface on PSP is pretty good though, just wish they had more anime, would love access to Crunchyroll for example as the anime on there is free. But I digress...
