Nicolas Doucet, a producer and art director at Sony Computer Entertainment's London Studio, has suggested that PS3 titles The Getaway and Eight Days have not been completely axed but instead “just put to one side”.

The title’s had been presumed cancelled after Sony said in June 2008 that production of both games would “cease immediately due to the redistribution of resources and budget”. At the time, a Sony UK representative assured CVG that both titles had been "completely cancelled" and wouldn’t be resurrected at a later date.

“I would not say they have been abandoned, just put to one side,” Doucet, who’s currently wrapping up work on EyePet, told GameKult (via GameSpot). “The studio just wanted to focus on its strengths, EyeToy and SingStar. Given the potential of EyePet, priorities have been changed, but the other projects aren't dead yet.”

Doucet added that “much work had been done” on the titles. “I think they were just over halfway through. They had a plan, everything was ready... Most importantly, The Getaway and Eight Days are still there."

We’ve contacted Sony for further comment.

The Getaway was OK, but the second one was terrible. Oddly, it looked far worse than the first one when usually with sequels, you see an improvement with the graphics. But I found the control and the pace of the first one to be quite poor.

It's taking a lot of courage, and some would say recklessness, on my part in coming out of my closet to say: (deep breath) I love The Getaway (There, wasn't so bad afterall).

And before you all start screaming "Stop! I need your details!" It's because it's (still) the closest thing we have to a good ol' Brit gangsta movie experience. Anyone familiar with The Sweeney of the '70's will realise how accurate The Getaway actually is in its shocking mockney accents and cringeing dialogue (Also Eastenders, anyone?).

I revisited The Getaway recently for a sort of re-evaluation, and that control system still trips me up. But I love the fact that it doesn't play like a generic FPS or TPS, where you can lazily right thumbstick-scan a room like some Predator on speed.

I was so disappointed when Getaway 3 was canned, and now rather excited it may not be after all. (Phew, that took a lot of guts, but that's 'Flying Squad Training' , lol)

Hello, my name's Gamerdad, and I too loved The Getaway.

You're right edshot, that wasn't so bad. :)

I loved it for the same reasons - London gangsta flick experience, mockney accents, etc. Playing it made me feel like watching Lock Stock, Snatch, or RocknRolla. Or watching these films made me feel like playing The Getaway. I also loved the accurate map of London, and fact that you could drive around Trafalgar, Covent Garden, Buck Palace, etc. It's one of the great PS2 games that I'd hoped would be reborn on the PS3.

If the PS3 version does get made, and it's online, then maybe you'll see me screaming down The Mall in a Black Cab or Routemaster bus.

I'd like to see The Getaway completed. it had potential that was never quite realised in it's PS2 iterations. Offering up 'Look I'm in London' wasn't quite enough, but it's a nice starting point to build from.
