Sony’s PSP increased its lead at the top of the Japanese hardware chart during the week ended March 7, boosted by the release of a “blossom pink” model.

Sales rose by almost 30,000 units week-on-week to nearly double those of the system’s closest competitor, Nintendo’s Wii.

Individual rankings were unchanged from the previous week, with PS3 placing third, followed by DSi LL, DSi and DS Lite.

Xbox 360, PS2 and PSPgo - which continues to perform in stark contrast to the older PSP-3000 model – rounded off the chart.

On the software front, four new titles placed in the top ten, with Pokemon Ranger: Tracks Of Light for DS claiming the top spot.

Weekly hardware sales (previous week):

PSP - 64,808 (37,338)
Wii - 33,880 (36,241)
PS3 - 28,824 (27,763)
DSi LL - 23,611 (24,605)
DSi - 15,017 (15,586)
DS Lite - 4,316 (5,029)
Xbox 360 - 2,764 (2,510)
PS2 - 1,839 (1,912)
PSPgo - 1,275 (1,296)

at least we'll have one week without the usual "But if you combine all the DS numbers it actually outsold the PSP" comment.

My old fat black PSP looks so boring these days, If they bring out a 'Hello Kitty' model, I'll be all over it (even the PSPgo).

You might want to email that directly to Sony! Good work on the PSP though, releasing a cherry blossom flavour just in advance of the cherry blossom frenzy is good marketing. The same thing could be done over here with an X-factor themed unit. God I hate UK "culture"....
