Sony has announced it is readying a software update that will allow the PlayStation 3 to run 3D games and movies.

The update will be available for free and requires no hardware update to the PS3 itself, however a 3D TV is still necessary.

"PS3 users worldwide will only need to upgrade the PS3 system software via the internet and there is no need to repurchase the system to enjoy 3D games," said Nainan Shah, vice-president of new platform, planning and development, SCEE.

Sony is investing heavily in 3D entertainment and plans to re-release a number of titles in stereoscopic 3D this year along with a 3D TV.

You can buy a 60" DLP HDTV made by Mitsubishi at ABC Warehouse for only $894 brand new. This awesome HDTV is 3D and it looks amazing!

2010 is the year of HDMI 1.4, which is why all the smart people are waiting until the Blu-ray players with HDMI 1.4 are released before making a purchase. The gap in quality between HDMI 1.1 and 1.2 was absolutely huge. But the gap between HDMI 1.2 and 1.3 was very small. The gap between HDMI 1.3 and 1.4 is very large, so it really does make sense to wait until the HDMI 1.4 players are available in just a couple months.

All I hear about 3D is the money involved - how much 3D TV's are, how much Avatar cost to make, how much Avatar has earned, how much cinema has to pay to update their screens, etc..

3D is a niche that should be cinema only, they need it most and the big screens are worthy of the depth. We all feel that the glasses are stupid and the experience itself can give users headaches or nausea in a 3 hour sitting.

Let's leave this one for the like of Odeon to replenish it's dying format and keep things within a cinema audience, not a home.

3D is the only draw capable of keeping me from waiting for rental and enjoying at home with a couple of tinnies and my own toilet, I mean, there's nowt like your own throne is there?

I can't even go on an unfamiliar bowl, it's just not natural.

After a packet of Imax nachos, a pack of M&M's, a bucket of popcorn and two litres of Coke, beggars can't be choosers...

...unless you can put that empty popcorn bucket to good use (without getting caught by the staff, or worse, the guy with a video camera pirating the movie).

Coming soon, to a Japanese, 3D ready, pay-per-view website near you...

I can't wait to never use this.

All this 3D malarkey is all too soon. There isn't even enough HD stuff around. I have 360/PS3/SkyHD and 70% of my tv use is still in standard definition. I'm not interested in buying a 3D tv just for a few games, football games in 3D and the occasional film.

Get rid of the glasses and prepare tons of 3D content then I might be interested.

The only thing I'd wish for is a way to view 3D without the glasses. Other than that, 3D movies are working - Avatar in a good theater looked great - so I don't see why 3D games would not. But I guess having a discussion about this is like having a discussion with people who do not want genres to evolve. Or anything for that matter.

Keeyop's picture

I'd love a decent 3D system, but part of the reason Avatar looked great was because of the "good theatre" (seeing it at the imax was sweet), a home version with silly glasses just doesn't seem like it will play to the masses. versions of 3D that don't require the glasses are possible but they have a narrow viewing field (the argument being that other people in the room wouldn't get a very good picture) instead of pursuing that technology they instead expect everyone in the room to be wearing black plastic glasses instead.

3d glasses are exactly the reason it will die out

StealthBadger's picture

Maybe. I guess that auto-stereoscopic could catch on instead then, as it doesn't require glasses?

I think it's too soon to launch now though, as I still haven't upgraded to HD.... (am moving house next month, didn't want to buy a new TV with the hassle of moving it). I think the main thing stopping it from going massive at the moment is cost. I can get 42" of 1080p bravia for £450 (off play.com), but the cheapest 3d tv is somewhere in the £3k range..

EDIT: It possibly isn't clear that I was being slightly flippant, as Auto-stereoscopic currently costs somewhere in the region of £30k, and I'm not completely sure that they're even available..

I really don't mind wearing glasses - it will be in the comfort of my own home, so I'm not trying to impress anyone. I have yet to see Avatar at all, let alone in 3D (or even Up!), but I am very curious about the effect.

Regardless, I was happy to leap around my room wielding a pair of brightly coloured maracas, equally as comfortable with placing a ridiculous steering wheel peripheral between my legs for Gran Turismo and felt no embarrassment at all with a grey and red bazooka on my shoulder (and still don't ;-D). Why should a pair of glasses bother me..?

Go to specsavers - I hear you can get two pairs for less the £30k ;-)

StealthBadger's picture

But the fact that the glasses look a bit silly isn't really the problem, it's that they make your eyes hurt (or at least, they make my eyes hurt) after a while. The enjoyment is increased by performing "amazing" physics experiments involving rotating the polarisers over each other though..

As a big fan of Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat, it's safe to say i don't mind the daft looking peripherals!

I Am The Manta's picture

Well that is certainly a valid concern. I will have to wait and see whether I get a migraine when I eventually try them (or from the constant, loud drumming ;-D)

Mooks's picture

I'm still not convinced 3D will catch on, glasses or not. I would imagine, if they catch on anywhere it will be in games, especially glasses free schemes, because the narrow viewing angle is less important. However, I accept that they may add a little more immersion (I say may because I am not convinced), but I don't see what practical aspects they offer. Analogue control, surround sound, force feedback, polygons etc all added something to games, whether through new experiences or through improved feedback to the player, that were simply not possible before them. I don't see any significant way in which 3D will change gaming in a way that all of these have done.

Furthermore, extremely effective auto-stereoscopic displays have been around for quite a few years now on PCs/laptops and mobile phones (you don't really need to worry about viewing angle for these). You would imagine if 3D is going to take off anywhere then it's going to be on computers/mobiles, but they haven't exactly changed the world, so if glasses free technology hasn't taken over one of the most suitable markets, I don't see any form of 3D taking over other media once the novelty factor has worn off. As it did in the 1980s - I don't see anyone watching Jaws 3D in 3D anymore, well I don't see them watching Jaws 3D at all so that's probably not a good example.

I Am The Manta's picture

Well, perhaps an evolution of this tech will be the way forward. Most systems have cameras after all :-)

Mooks's picture

That's true. I really hope I'm proved wrong because I'm all for progress and new gaming experiences, I just haven't necessarily seen anything that's really convinced me that 3D can offer something worth the cost/effort. As I say though, hopefully I'm wrong, it wouldn't exactly be the first or last time!

neat! buddy holly be praised! who will be the first publisher to commission a back to the future game? probably none if they are wise cos 3d will die a quick death

Duncan_Stewart's picture

Yeah, because not only do I want to look like a dick waving my arms around to play games in the future, I also want to wear stupid fucking glasses. 3D excites me about as much as knob-rot.
