PS3 exclusive Uncharted 2: Among Thieves has surpassed one million sales “in just a couple weeks on the market,” according to publisher Sony.

"Uncharted 2 has become the highest rated current exclusive action adventure game on any platform with a Metacritic score of 96," Sony Computer Entertainment's senior VP of strategic business development, Phil Rosenberg, said at the BMO Capital Markets Digital Entertainment Conference.

"It's the second highest rated PS3 game ever. We've already sold over a million copies through last week in just a couple weeks on the market," he added, reports GameSpot.

Earlier this week the NPD Group said that Uncharted 2 was the bestselling individual software SKU in the US during October, shifting 537,000 copies.

I'm not surprised that UC2 sales have surpassed 1 million. I am surprised that it took a week to reach that number. Based on the glowing reviews and accolades heaped on UC1, I would've expected 1 million sales on the first day.

Then again, it seems the vast majority of consumers are content to repurchase last year's cookie-cutter games with nothing more than a coat of fresh paint and an incremented year/number on the cover. One only need witness EA's recent return to said shovelware as it's primary focus after seemingly disappointing sales of quite a few original titles. That doesn't bode well for new, highly rated IPs like Mirror's Edge, Brutal Legend, Dead Space, etc.

This game deserves 3M sales, altough it'll probably achieve 2. I just finished the single player mode, and but for some tedious firefights like the jungle and the monastery levels, it's an experience to be remembered for the rest of a lifetime (I never played the first one though). It also brought memories of Ico for its fluidity and awesome yamakazi-style platform sections.

However, I still expect team Ico's Last Guardian to surpass it in terms of gameplay and atmosphere. Uncharted is the pinnacle of classic, cinematic storytelling, but I still think videogames are capable of something else. We'll see.

Uncharted 1 took everyone by surprise. I played it enough that I had some minor gripes but I can say they've fixed 99% of my complaints and I will be playing multiplayer and singleplayer for a long time. It was well worth the wait. It may be the best sequel of any game I've ever played.

If Naughty Dog wanted to sell as many copies as MW2 they should have put some 'atrocities' in the game... for example you could have a himalayan village level where u play as Lazaravich & gun all the villagers down.

edshot's picture

The effects treasure hunters have on the environment / communities is acknowledged in the himalayan village level - albeit exaggerated? - unless you regard the decimation of a tranquil buddhist village as normal?

squazzil4's picture

It's just as 'normal' as gunning down an airport full of civilians. And you sell more copies of the game. I'm hoping Uncharted 3 will be like the 'Warrior Within' of the series... with more 'attitude', more mullets & more baaad action with the pistole

edshot's picture

I thought the message of how warfare affects innocent communities was much more subtle, mature and affecting in U2 than the no-holds-barred airport scene in MW2. I hope to God Naughty Dog approaches U3 with as much restraint and maturity.

Afterall, we'll always have MW3.

UC2 is one of my personal games of the year. While 1 million worldwide is decent sales for Naughty Dog itself, this is actually an embarrassingly low number for Sony's largest exclusive Holiday release. For perspective, compare this to what Halo: ODST, New Super Mario Bros. Wii and L4D2 will do this Holiday. There shouldn't be any caveats for PS3 this late in the cycle (ie - that's good sales for a PS3 title, etc.).

Have faith: this one'll be a slower burn than other recent high-profile releases.

Uncharted 2 has utterly trounced it's predecessor in terms of early sales. It stands as the second fastest selling PS3 exclusive behind Metal Gear Solid 4, and will likely become one of the consoles best selling games before the year is out. Embarrassingly low? A million after less than a month is certainly not that.

Well, it's guaranteed at least one more sale, as I have refused to buy it until I own an HDTV, which I am intending to get my hands on somewhere around christmas!

Uncharted 2 is one of a handful of games that have me dusting off my ps3 and willing to set my 360 controller down. I agree with the general view everyone seems to be stating that mw2 did kind of disappoint (its still great) but it disappoints in a way that re5 disappoints its more of the same although that same is AAA goodness. SpecOps is what Im finding to be the main attraction after finishing single player in a day! (sadly it was extremely short)Uncharted 2 being exclusive and still selling 1 million especially on the ps3 is an accomplishment. I for one can't wait to get my mits on it. Maybe tomorrow.

You won't regret it. When my jaw wasn't on the floor it was smiling ear to ear. One of the only games I've ever played that I wanted to get back too as soon as I could to experience more of the finely balanced game play and see how the story developed. Unlike MW2 that I find myself playing out of necessity, I know I've got to finish it. The cut scenes in MW2 are snore inducing. Maps, zoomy lines and pointless numbers and stats wizzing about. It really adds noting to the experience for me. I couldn't really tell you what the story is about... I find myself using the cut scenes to check my emails and send texts..

So broke down and bought uncharted 2 today. I also picked up assassins creed 2 and left 4 dead 2. Now with those dragon's age and modern warfare 2 Im absolutely in gamer heaven at the moment lol. I have to say I am most excited to play uncharted 2. I've been looking forward to and putting this off for too long.

Wow I didn't see this game selling well even with great reviews just based on Sony's big exclusives tending to underperform and the fact that this title was still somewhat of an unknown or at least it hadn't quite established itself as one of the big hitters. Congrats Naughty Dog.

Ivor_Biguns's picture

Ha ha! I remember you saying it wouldn't sell.

Naughty Dog clearly put their heart and soul into the game and I am so glad it has been successful.

NickgamertagO1's picture

Ha, I did say that because that would have gone with the trend and it wasn't really a huge seller the first time and it's not really one of their big guns (wasn't I should say).

It really is a shame that MW2 has sold so many more than Nate's 2nd outing. I enjoyed every minute of it. So far I'm finding MW2 a little dissapointing and actually dare I say it a little boring. If only more people would pick up uncharted 2 and they too will seethe light. Sure, they're different genres but pound for pound U2 does it for me

NickgamertagO1's picture

I have to agree with you on MW2. I find it more than a little boring, the cookie-cutter shooting-gallery style gameplay just doesn't hold my interest. Ok one level I'm shooting at random windows (some animated some not) in a snowy area, then a forest area, then a slum-like area, rinse repeat. Sorry, other games have held my interest for much longer. It seems (to me) the Activision plague is starting to infect the CoD series as well. Rehash same stale gameplay with new environments, unbalanced multiplayer, and less than stellar B-movie plot line. Moving on...

Elex's picture

i did find U2 a better game overall, and by a wide margin. not that i was diappointed by MW2, mind. the campaign was unlawfully short, and the story wasn't as cohesive as CoD4, but i'm really enjoying Spec Ops so far. i don't think anyone expected U2 to sell near the numbers of MW2. it's still a fairly new IP, it's a console exclusive, and the original didn't get nearly the coverage that CoD4 did. but one million in a few weeks isn't bad by a long shot. as long as it sells well enough to encourage Sony and Naughty Dog to continue the IP then i'll be a happy camper.

hasan's picture

I agree, but hopefully it sell a lot more especially now PS3 sales are picking up....

It's a shame that Call of Duty has stomped all over everything, as this is a mighty fine achievement. According to VG Chartz, this is the 24th best selling game on the PS3, and I can see it overtaking it's predecessor which sits in 9th place before the end of the year.

Hi Alex - I had you down as having high hopes for MW2 - has it lived up to expectations?

Alex Walker's picture

I've not finished it, so I'll reserve judgment until the end, but so far it's been a bit of a disappointment. Thats not to say it's a bad game, I've certainly enjoyed it, but when compared to Call of Duty 4, it's fallen a little flat.

The problem is that they decided to completely abandon the grounding in reality and decided to ape Michael Bay, but I enjoyed the more reserved approach from the last game, There isn't really anything inherently wrong with it, but it just hasn't been what I wanted so far.

Special Ops mode though is buckets of fun.

I really loved this game. Well deserved.
