BioWare’s sequel was well received by critics and consumers, selling two million copies globally in its first week of availability. First week UK sales on Xbox 360 were almost double those of the original Mass Effect and three times higher on PC.

Memory Lane

The confession, in these very pages, brought me scorn: “I’m a relative newcomer to videogames, having only dedicated myself seriously to the medium – both as a journalist and as a player – since 1999.” When I wrote those words in early 2008, I was only trying to make a point about how if developers would rethink their approaches to difficulty, progression and challenge in games, they might reach – and retain – larger audiences than they would otherwise.

But as a criticism of an artistic endeavour, could this have any validity? Can style, sometimes, create substance? Such accusations are usually levelled at those games that feature a relatively basic form of player interaction plus a vivid and unique aesthetic treatment. And that’s why it’s a meaningless statement: among other things, videogames are a visual art, so the way they look is critically important in defining how their players derive interaction and meaning from them.

The event, co-hosted by the Savannah College for Art and Design and Georgia Tech between February 4 and 6, was intended to trace the co-evolution of games and art. The centerpiece of the event was the presentation of three games in Atlanta’s Kai Lin Gallery by Jason Rohrer, Tale Of Tales, and the duo of Eric Zimmerman and architect Nathalie Pozzi.
